2026 Practical Pain Imaging Essentials Series: MRI Interpretation × Ultrasound Clinical Integration

The 2026 ULTRASOUND × MRI Practical Pain Imaging Foundation Series is co-hosted by Dr. Ping-Sheng Lu, Director of Radiant Clinic, and Dr. Che-Wei Hsu, Director of Taipei Wei Yi Clinic. Dr. Yu-Chieh Wu from Radiant Clinic will serve as the instructor for the shoulder joint and knee joint sessions.
The series consists of four sessions covering, in sequence, the cervical spine, lumbar spine, shoulder joint, and knee joint. It integrates MRI interpretation, musculoskeletal ultrasound, medical history taking, physical examination, muscle strength testing, and differential diagnosis of pain to establish a comprehensive cognitive framework from "viewing the image" to "making clinical decisions."
This course is ideal for physicians who frequently manage neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, joint pain, and neuropathic pain.
What Problems Does This Course Solve for You?
MRI can reveal many structural abnormalities, but the true difficulty in clinical interpretation is often not determining "whether there is an abnormality," but rather: Is this imaging finding related to the patient's current symptoms?
A single MRI may simultaneously show disc degeneration, herniation, or other structural changes across multiple segments. Relying solely on reading the report without integrating the patient's history, symptom location, physical examination, and neurological function makes it very difficult to confirm which imaging findings are truly clinically significant.
The focus of this series is to establish the link among "Symptoms & History → Physical Examination → MRI Interpretation → Ultrasound Evaluation → Differential Diagnosis → Clinical Decision-Making," rather than simply identifying abnormalities on an MRI.
Cloud MRI Contains Many Images; Where Should You Actually Begin Clinically?
Medical institutions now frequently retrieve patients' past MRI scans via the NHI Cloud Medical Image System. In clinical practice, physicians often face the questions: Which series should be reviewed first among the massive volume of data? Which plane requires attention? Which signals are more relevant to the patient's symptoms?
Starting from real-world clinical scenarios, this course explains the selection of MRI series, adjustment of display parameters, and interpretation methods for key planes, before cross-referencing with the patient's symptoms and examination results. An MRI is not an isolated answer; it is part of the clinical reasoning process.
How Can MRI and Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Be Used Together?
MRI and musculoskeletal ultrasound answer different questions. MRI provides comprehensive information on deep anatomy and tissues, while musculoskeletal ultrasound allows for real-time, dynamic outpatient observation of tendons, muscles, ligaments, peripheral nerves, and other soft tissues.
Clinically, three judgments must be established: Which questions should be answered by MRI? In what situations is ultrasound needed as a supplement? How can both imaging modalities be cross-validated with symptoms, history, and physical examinations? This series uses pain cases from different anatomical regions to practice this integrated approach.
Why Are Diagnostic Imaging Physicians and PM&R Pain Specialists Teaching Together?
The three instructors bring different professional backgrounds, and their co-teaching offers complementary expertise.
Dr. Ping-Sheng Lu | Director of Radiant Clinic | Specialist in Diagnostic Radiology, Neuroradiology, and Pain Medicine; currently a Board Director of the Taiwan Society of Interventional Radiology (TSIR). His clinical practice is rooted in medical imaging, integrating MRI, ultrasound, X-ray, and interventional imaging for pain evaluation and image-guided treatment. In this series, he bridges MRI interpretation with clinical pain management from the perspectives of diagnostic imaging and neuroradiology.
Dr. Che-Wei Hsu | Director of Taipei Wei Yi Clinic | Specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), Pain Medicine Specialist, Certified Interventional Pain Sonologist (CIPS); dedicated to musculoskeletal ultrasound, pain evaluation, and clinical treatment for many years.
Dr. Yu-Chieh Wu | Physician at the Precision Image Pain Clinic, Radiant Clinic. Former Attending Physician in the Department of Medical Imaging at Wan Fang Hospital and Shuang Ho Hospital, and former Attending Physician in the Pain Clinic at Shuang Ho Hospital. Specialist in Diagnostic Radiology, certified in Interventional Radiology in Taiwan, and a trained pain specialist of the Taiwan Pain Society. Her clinical practice focuses on medical imaging-based musculoskeletal pain assessment. She is responsible for the shoulder and knee joint sessions, explaining how imaging findings correlate with patient symptoms and physical examinations from the perspectives of peripheral joint MRI interpretation and ultrasound evaluation.
By placing the perspectives of diagnostic imaging and PM&R pain medicine within the same case, MRI, ultrasound, physical examination, and actual patient symptoms can be cross-referenced rather than interpreted in isolation.
