FAQs
Here is a summary of the most frequently asked questions by first-time patients: What is C-TAME (Standard - Transcatheter Arterial Microembolization)? What are the differences between it and s-TAME (Simple - Transcatheter Arterial Microembolization)? Who is suitable for Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)? And how to make an appointment.
Reviewing this section beforehand allows the doctor to focus directly on your specific symptoms during your consultation. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask us directly via LINE.
● What is C-TAME (Micro-arterial Embolization)?
C-TAME is a catheter-based micro-arterial embolization therapy designed to treat abnormally proliferating microvessels at sites of chronic pain.
Physicians insert a microcatheter through an artery, guided by GE OEC 3D mobile C-arm imaging with cone-beam CT functionality, and inject a contrast agent to confirm the location before performing embolization. The wound is about the size of a pinhole, and the procedure is completed under local anesthesia in most cases.
● What is the difference between C-TAME and s-TAME treatments?
The biggest difference is: C-TAME uses a catheter, while s-TAME uses a fine needle.
C-TAME utilizes a catheter and cone-beam CT angiography, which requires contrast media, and can address deeper, more complex areas where pain has persisted for a long time. In contrast, s-TAME is performed under ultrasound guidance using a fine needle injection, without the use of a catheter or contrast media, to treat more superficial pain.
Hera Clinic primarily focuses on catheter-based C-TAME. For more superficial pain, the physician can evaluate whether a simplified s-TAME is suitable.
● What kinds of pain are suitable for C-TAME evaluation?
Chronic pain that recurs and has limited response to other treatments is most suitable for C-TAME evaluation. Examples include degenerative arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, and long-term pain that remains recurrent even after medication, rehabilitation, or injection therapy.
Whether to undergo treatment must be determined by a physician after medical history taking, a physical examination, and imaging evaluation.
● Who is Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) suitable for?
PAE is suitable for men whose enlarged prostate causes frequent urination, nocturia, and weak stream, but who do not want or are not suitable for traditional surgery.
This includes: those concerned about anesthesia risks, worried about instruments entering through the urethra or affecting erectile function, wishing to shorten the recovery period, and those whose prostate tissue is too large for traditional surgery.
The physician uses a catheter to selectively block the arterial blood flow supplying the prostate, thereby reducing the volume of the gland. Suitability must be assessed by a physician based on the volume of the prostate and overall condition before giving a treatment recommendation.
● Does C-TAME treatment require hospitalization? How long is the recovery period?
No hospitalization is required, and the recovery period for daily activities is short.
C-TAME is a minimally invasive procedure, mostly performed under local anesthesia, with post-operative follow-up at the outpatient clinic. The wound at the wrist is about the size of a pinhole, and the actual recovery situation depends on the treatment site and individual conditions, which the doctor will explain before the procedure.
● Do C-TAME and s-TAME require the same equipment?
No, they do not. C-TAME requires angiography equipment, while s-TAME only requires ultrasound. C-TAME requires angiography equipment with cone-beam CT (3D tomography) capabilities to obtain three-dimensional images of microvessels during the procedure for selective embolization; s-TAME is performed under ultrasound guidance to treat more superficial areas. Shin Medical Clinic is equipped with the GE OEC 3D mobile C-arm (with cone-beam CT function) to perform C-TAME in our angiography operating room.
● How are consultation fees calculated?
The initial consultation fee for the Pain Special Clinic is NT$3,000, and the follow-up consultation is NT$1,500. The initial consultation already includes advanced ultrasound imaging, X-ray imaging, physical examinations, and detailed medical history taking.
The initial consultation for the Men's Function and Cardiovascular Health Special Clinic is NT$1,500, and the follow-up is NT$800. The initial consultation for Varicose Veins, Neurosurgery, and Rehabilitation Special Outpatient Clinics is NT$600, and the follow-up is NT$300. Subsequent treatment costs will depend on the treatment plan evaluated by the doctor, which will be fully explained prior to treatment.
● Must C-TAME be performed in a large hospital or medical center?
Not necessarily; the key factors are the equipment and the physician's expertise, rather than the level of the hospital.
Performing C-TAME requires cone-beam CT angiography equipment and a physician specializing in intervention. Xi-Yi Clinic is equipped with the GE OEC 3D mobile C-arm (with cone-beam CT functionality), and the procedure is performed by Dr. Ping-Sheng Lu, Director of Diagnostic Radiology and Neuroradiology, with the treatment completed in our clinic's operating room. Whether the treatment is suitable still requires evaluation by a physician.
● Where is Hsi Clinic located? How do I make an appointment?
Hsi Clinic is located at 2F-1, No. 40, Sec. 2, Heping E. Rd., Da'an Dist., Taipei City, near Da'an Forest Park. We operate strictly by appointment only. You can make an appointment online via LINE or by calling (02) 2366-0186. We are closed on Sundays.
