1. Relieving 4 Major Types of Sports Injuries! Why Has PRP Become a New Favorite in Regenerative Medicine?

In recent years, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections, as a regenerative medicine technique, have been widely used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal problems. PRP injection uses the patient’s own blood, which is centrifuged and then injected as plasma rich in platelets into damaged or degenerative tissue to promote tissue repair and regeneration.

Platelets contain a variety of growth factors, such as FGF, PDGF, TGF-β, EGF, VEGF, and IGF. These factors can attract cells near the damaged tissue, thereby promoting the tissue repair process. PRP injections have a wide range of applications and can be used for musculoskeletal problems throughout the body, including the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and feet:

  • Shoulder: PRP can be used to treat frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tears, and shoulder osteoarthritis.

  • Elbow: It is suitable for tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and tendon tears.

  • Knee: PRP can be used for osteoarthritis, ACL injuries, meniscus injuries, and patellar tendinitis.

  • Foot: It can effectively treat plantar fasciitis.

  • Back/waist: Such as lower back pain or sciatica.

The composition of PRP varies depending on platelet concentration and the amount of other cellular components, and it is not fixed. PRP is usually divided into several types: pure platelet-rich plasma (P-PRP), which contains a high concentration of platelets but almost no white blood cells, and its main functions are tissue repair and reducing inflammation; another type of PRP is leukocyte-rich PRP (L-PRP), which helps enhance inflammatory response and antibacterial effects, so it is more suitable for chronically damaged areas or areas with a higher risk of infection.

2. Not Feeling Much Improvement After PRP? Doctor Technique and Injection Volume Both Affect Results

The concentration of platelets in PRP is usually 3-5 times that of normal blood, but higher is not always better. Too low a concentration may lead to poor results, while too high a concentration may cause severe inflammation. Therefore, doctors need to precisely adjust the concentration according to the patient’s specific condition and needs in order to achieve the best therapeutic effect. “Overall, individual constitution, blood quality, preparation process, and injection technique all affect the results of PRP!”

“The effects of PRP in specific groups may be less noticeable than in the general population. For example, older adults and patients with chronic conditions (such as diabetes or anemia) may have lower platelet activity and blood quality, which may affect PRP’s repair capability!”

The doctor’s professional skill, such as familiarity with anatomical structures and whether they are adept at using image-guided techniques (such as ultrasound assistance), has a crucial impact on the effectiveness of PRP injections. If the injection site is not precise enough, PRP may not effectively act on the damaged tissue, greatly reducing the treatment effect.

In addition, the dosage of PRP injection is also one of the key factors affecting efficacy. Injecting too much into areas such as the hip or shoulder joint may cause discomfort for the patient; for areas with poorer blood circulation, such as the sole of the foot or the patellar tendon, a stronger regenerative factor preparation may be needed to achieve the ideal treatment result.

3. Can PRP Be Used as Daily Maintenance? Daily Habits Are the Real Foundation

Many people have high expectations for PRP injections and want to know whether they can be used as a form of daily maintenance. PRP injections can indeed be used for daily maintenance, but it mainly depends on the purpose of the treatment. If used for aesthetic care, such as promoting collagen production, improving skin quality, or slowing aging, PRP can stimulate cell renewal through its growth factors, improve skin firmness and elasticity, and achieve a “maintenance-type” effect. In addition, for areas such as joints or tendons, PRP can be used for preventive care to reduce the risk of joint degeneration or improve mild discomfort, thereby enhancing recovery ability when the next injury occurs.

However, PRP injections are not a one-and-done solution. Although some studies show that the effects of PRP can last for a year, the therapeutic effect gradually diminishes over time. When PRP is used for joint or tendon repair, the duration of its effect may be only about six months. For degenerative arthritis or chronic tendon problems, a series of 3 injections is usually given first, and initially 3 to 6 treatment sessions may be needed, followed by maintenance injections to consolidate the effect.

In summary, PRP injections, as a highly regarded regenerative medicine technique, show promising potential in treating musculoskeletal problems. However, many factors—including PRP composition, concentration, injection technique, individual constitution, and lifestyle habits—directly affect the final outcome. Therefore, patients should seek diagnosis and treatment from a professional physician and actively follow good lifestyle habits in order to ensure that PRP injections achieve the desired results.
